Chocolate Chip Cookies
My recipe for true American chocolate chip cookies.
Growing up, there was nothing better than going over a friend’s house after school and eating freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Everyone’s family had a chocolate chip cookie recipe they swore by. Some had a higher flour ratio, some had more chocolate chips, some were soft, others were crisp. Some were better than others, but then again, I’ve never met a chocolate chip cookie I didn’t like.

The recipe
Prep time: 10 minutes
Bake time: 7-9 minutes
Total time: 20 minutes
Servings: 12
Cuisine: American
Keywords: chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chips, American cookies
Ingredients
315g (2.5 cups) all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
220g (1 cup or 2 sticks) butter (softened)
150g (2/3 cup + 1 tbsp) granulated sugar
150g (3/4 cups) brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 large eggs
300g (1.5-2 cups) semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius)
In a small bowl combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
In a mixing bowl, cream the butter with the two sugars for 5 minutes until light and fluffy.
Add the vanilla extract to the creamed butter. Mix. Add the eggs, one at a time, making sure to scrape down the sides and beat well.
Gradually add the flour to the butter mixture one spoonful at a time—don’t over mix.
Add the chocolate chips to the dough and mix in by hand with a spoon or spatula.
Use a small spoon to drop dough onto baking sheets.
Bake for 7-9 minutes. Depending on how large your cookies are, it could take up to 10 minutes. Watch them carefully after the 7 minute mark.
The cookies should be crisp and golden on the outside, and soft on the inside.
Notes
I always use salted butter when baking these cookies. The added saltiness makes the cookies extra delicious.
